How to Read Call Numbers

Location of an item is important to note, as we have items in a variety of places:
  • Main Stacks (aka the bookshelves on the 6th floor of Sharp)
    • Note: Some books will say "Main Stacks - LIBRARY USE ONLY". This means the book is in the Main Stacks but cannot be checked out or is "Non-Circulating". You can always make scans or photocopies of these materials need be.
  • Oversized Stacks (aka the book shelf that runs the length of the library) for larger books
  • Storage
    • To get these items, write down the call number and bring it to the front desk. Storage books CAN be checked out!
  • Reserves (located at the library front desk)
    • Note: These materials can only be used in the library for 3 hours (in some special cases overnight)
  • JFABC (Joan Flasch Artists' Book Collection Reading Room) located on the 5th Floor of the Sharp Building
    • Note: None of the items in this location can be checked out, but are available to use while in the space
  • FRC (Fashion Resource Center) in 36 S. Wabash on the 7th Floor of Sullivan
    • Note: None of the items in this location can be checked out, but are available to use while in the space
Availability of an item is also important as it will determine if it is currently in the library:
  • If the book says it is Available with a green box or dot, that means it should be in its correct location
    • Note: Some materials will also say
  • If the book says Not Available with a red box or dot, that means that it is not going to be on the shelves. Usually this means it is being used by someone else, lost/missing, or being reviewed by librarians.
