How to Cite Images

Take Note

Taking note of the following elements as you find things will help when it comes time to finish your citations! (Citation examples below.)

  • Artist’s name
  • Title of Work
  • Date
  • Medium
  • Institution (or collection) that owns the work
  • Location of institution - city, state (if in the United States), and country
  • Image source information (Link and database/website if online / Publication information (title, author, page number, etc.) if print)
    Image type (print or digital)

Pro-Tips

  • Higher quality images and citation information is often available through an institution’s digital collection online (rather than Google Images)
  • Using ArtStor can make finding and citing high quality images easier
