Women’s History Month is a period of reflection on the often overlooked contributions of women to culture, history, and society. Women's History Month grew out of a weeklong window of recognition that began in 1980 and has been celebrated every March since 1986. Now it symbolizes not only the accomplishments of women of the past, it also honors the experiences of all women-identifying individuals in the present day.
At SAIC, we recognize that the term women is intersectional, inclusive of all races and nationalities as well as multiple gender identities. Not all who identify as women have the same experiences, and our various identities overlap in unique and complex ways that systemically impact our day-to-day experiences. In celebrating the achievements of all women-identifying persons throughout Women’s History Month and into the rest of the year, our work must explore ways to build equity for all who identify as women before we can achieve a truly equitable society. Included in Women’s History Month is International Women’s Day (March 8), a worldwide occasion for celebrating the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women; and International Transgender Day of Visibility (March 31), a worldwide celebration of all transgender people and their contributions to society that raises awareness of discrimination they face.
